{alltv} 'As the World Turns': Final spin

TimeLife.com
http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/100826/First-Look/As-The-World_Turns_320.jpg

EW obtained this exclusive shot of Kathryn Hays (Kim Hughes) and Don Hastings (Bob Hughes) from As the World Turns' last day of taping in June. In preparation for the soap's series finale on Sept. 17, we talked to Hays about those final hours on the soap's Brooklyn set and what it was like to say goodbye:

"The last day was poignant, and what was so incredible about it was how we shot pretty much in order that day. As each group finished with a scene, that would be the end of their involvement. But it wasn't like tomorrow was another show, so the studio got really full. By the time they got to our scenes with Don and myself, there was hardly any room for cameras or the boom. In a way, it felt like being in a theater. We don't normally have an audience. The stage manager asked if it was going to be a problem for us, but we both said no. It was  like everybody's arm was around us. It was absolutely incredible, there was not a sound. It was like everyone was holding their breath. In a way, we were all doing it together. When we finished, Don and I both spoke a little bit to everybody, and the whole As the World Turns family moved to the other end of big studio where they had the world's longest table set up, covered with champagne glasses.

"On the way home, I said to my daughter that if you are gonna go out, this is the way to do it. We had been talking about making changes for a long time, so it's not like this was a major surprise. We had been given six months warning, and our executive producer Chris Goutman absolutely insisted that we drive story all the way to the end. And I cannot begin to say how hard people were working. The writers must have felt as if they had fallen into some hellhole.  Everybody worked their buns off. When it came to the end, it felt that we had done our best.

"I think if you look beyond soap operas, you'll see that people like to have an ongoing story. They love to read sequels of books. They like to see sequels of movies. Maybe soaps will be changed in some way. Or maybe at some point, someone will come along and say that nobody wants to watch reality shows anymore and that maybe we should try telling stories again. Soaps will come back in some way. As far as I'm personally concerned, I feel it was a major privilege to be part of this family."

{alltv} Judge doubts prosecutors can prove 2 key charges

TimeLife.com

LOS ANGELES – The judge in the Anna Nicole Smith drug conspiracy trial said Tuesday he doubted prosecutors can prove key charges against two doctors and the lawyer-boyfriend of the late Playboy model.

The two counts targeted by Superior Court Judge Robert Perry are at the heart of the case, accusing the three defendants of conspiring to prescribe, administer and dispense controlled substances to an addict and obtaining and dispensing prescriptions by fraud and use of false names.

Perry raised the issue after a juror sent him a note asking for a copy of the charging document. He said he was unsure about sending the jury the entire document, indicating it might change before they were asked to reach a verdict.

"I'm not sure you can make your conspiracy counts one and two from what I've heard," Perry told prosecutors. "But I am not ruling on that now."

Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, Dr. Khristine Eroshevich and Howard K. Stern have pleaded not guilty. They are not charged with Smith's overdose death in 2007.

Prosecutors are nearing the end of their case in the fourth week of the trial. Once they rest. the judge has the authority to dismiss any charges he thinks are not supported by evidence.

Earlier in the day, Dr. James Gagne, an expert witness for the prosecution, was cross-examined by defense attorney Steve Sadow, who attacked Gagne's claim that Smith was a drug addict and her doctors should have known it.

The defense maintains Smith was dependent on drugs to control her chronic pain syndrome and did not meet the definition of an addict.

At one point, Gagne said he believed Kapoor should not have continued sending Smith prescriptions for Methadone when she was pregnant in the Bahamas.

"She was 3,000 miles away in the Bahamas and she needed local care," Gagne testified. "I agree stopping Methadone at that point would have been deadly to the fetus. One prescription would have been appropriate but not continuing the medication."

Sadow asked if Gagne knew Methadone was not available in the Bahamas, but the answer was not allowed because there had been no previous testimony about the topic.

{alltv} After Injury, Jordin Sparks Misses Sunday and Monday Shows of 'In the Heights'

TimeLife.com

Jordin Sparks, the "American Idol" finalist who recently made her Broadway debut as Nina in In the Heights, injured her hip at the evening performance Aug. 28 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

The injury occurred in Act One, a spokesman said. Sparks finished the Saturday night show but missed both shows Sunday, Aug. 29. Understudy Courtney Reed went on. Playbill.com has learned that on a doctor's suggestion, Sparks will also sit out the Aug. 30 performance.

*

Sparks, the 2007 winner of TV's "American Idol," stepped into another American success story on Aug. 19 when she joined the Broadway cast of In the Heights, the Tony Award winner about the Latino neighborhood of Manhattan's Washington Heights.

Sparks is making her Broadway debut in the role of college student Nina Rosario, who returns home from Stanford University for the summer — with a secret that shakes the foundation of her family's American dream. Friends, family and a new love rally around her in the musical portrait of a changing neighborhood where multiple musical styles echo on the streets, spill from the windows and brew in the minds of its eclectic Latino characters.

Sparks will play a limited 12-week engagement through Nov. 14.

Creator and Tony-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda told Playbill.com, "Jordin is an undeniable talent and an incredibly versatile performer. When she came in to audition for the creative team, I knew she'd be able to sing the role of Nina (and does she ever). I was not prepared for how winning and honest an actress she'd be. I can't wait to see her tear it up with the rest of this amazing company."

{alltv} A grown-up 'Big Brother' finds strong ratings

TimeLife.com

NEW YORK – As it heads toward the conclusion of its 12th season, "Big Brother" is having a strong summer in the ratings.

The Nielsen Co. said the CBS reality show is averaging 7.6 million viewers for its three weekly episodes, a 6 percent increase from last summer's 7.2 million average. Among viewers ages 18 to 34, ratings are up 10 percent.

"We've been thrilled with the ratings this summer," said Allison Grodner, executive producer. She's been with the show since its second season, when "Big Brother" started to emphasize game-playing over the simple voyeuristic experience of watching strangers live together.

Last week all three of its episodes finished among Nielsen's top 12 most-watched shows. For comparison, the only thing on Fox to reach that many viewers was an exhibition football game, and the only thing on ABC was Tuesday's edition of "Wipeout."

Entertainment Weekly recently put "Big Brother" atop its cultural barometer "Must List," calling the show "as addictively silly as ever."

Producers last year learned the importance of casting characters that people enjoy following each week, Grodner said. She believes that's been a big reason for its success at a point most shows are running out of steam.

"You can have a rootable villain or a fun villain," she said. "You don't want to necessarily have someone who is completely hateable."

"Big Brother" is working toward its season finale on Sept. 15.

Meanwhile, the NBC, ABC and CBS evening newscasts combined for a dubious record last week: the average of 18.7 million people who watched one of the three shows last week was the smallest audience those three telecasts have reached collectively on record, since the infancy of television, Nielsen said.

During the slow news period of late August, the broadcasts broke their previous record — set just last week.

For the week, CBS topped the prime-time ratings with an average of 6.6 million viewers (4.2 rating, 8 share). NBC, buoyed a strong showing by the Emmy Awards, was a close second with a 6.4 million average (4.0, 7). NBC tied with Fox, which averaged 5.1 million viewers overall (3.1, 6), for the lead among the demographically desired group of viewers ages 18 to 49. ABC averaged 4.3 million viewers (2.7, 5), ION Television had 1.4 million (0.9, 2) and the CW had 910,000 (0.6, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with 3.5 million viewers in prime time (1.8 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 900,000 (0.5, 1), TeleFutura had 630,000 (0.3, 1), Azteca had 200,000 and Estrella 190,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.2 million viewers (4.9, 10). ABC's "World News" was second with 6.6 million (4.5, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 4.9 million viewers (3.3, 7).

A ratings point represents 1,159,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 115.9 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Aug. 23-29, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "Emmy Awards," NBC, 13.5 million; "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday), NBC, 10.8 million; "America's Got Talent" (Wednesday), 10.52 million; Exhibition Football: Pittsburgh at Denver, Fox, 10.13 million; "NCIS," CBS, 9.19 million; "60 Minutes," 8.74 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 8.39 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 8.36 million; "Big Brother 12" (Wednesday), CBS, 7.99 million; "Wipeout" (Tuesday), ABC, 7.98 million.
