With a lot of justification, organizations such as ACTRA and most of Canada's roster of actors and other creative types have spent years issuing dire warnings about the erosion of the country's television industry. Specifically in the arena of original series.
But the constant complaining about problems with government funding, government regulations and the private sector's penchant for buying American has had one unfortunate side effect. It makes it appear that there is nothing Canadian to celebrate.
Wrong. And the new release of two box sets, Heartland: The Complete First Season and Heartland: The Complete Second Season is a poignant reminder.
Heartland is a quality family show set on an Alberta ranch. Inspired by the books of Lauren Brooke, Heartland weaves the weekly tale of a family-run horse rescue ranch. Those two first seasons from 2007-08 and 2008-09 are new to DVD. The third season, 2009-2010 just finished its broadcast run. The fourth season starts shooting Wednesday, with home base in Calgary.
There are other Canadian shows to tap into, both on air and on DVD. Among them is the action series Flashpoint, starring Hugh Dillon. Season 2: Volume 1 just came out in March. The Complete First Season is also available. Another dynamic Dillon series is Durham County, with Season 1 available. Two seasons of The Border are on DVD. All six seasons of Brent Butt's brilliantly droll Saskatchewan comedy, Corner Gas, are out on DVD.
These are examples. There are others. Let the politicking continue — but don't forget to see what is available.
