Redgrave's death comes one month after the death of her brother, actor Corin Redgrave, 70, and one year after the death of her niece, actress Natasha Richardson, 45, in a ski accident.
Publicist Rick Miramontez said Redgrave died surrounded by her children, Ben, Pema and Annabel, and close friends.
The daughter and granddaughter of acclaimed actors, Redgrave was insecure about her own talents compared with her siblings, especially Oscar-winning Vanessa, who is still working at 73. They were the children of actors Michael Redgrave and his wife, Rachel Kempson, and shared a family resemblance: tall, fair, blue eyes, reddish hair.
Lynn's sweet, ugly-duckling performance in Georgy Girl stood out in that film's then-risqué look at swinging '60s London. She was nominated for a best-actress Oscar for that role and later for best supporting actress for playing a loyal housekeeper in Gods and Monsters (1998). Other recent films: Shine, Kinsey and Confessions of a Shopaholic.
On stage, she received Tony nominations for Mrs. Warren's Profession (1976), The Constant Wife (2005), and Shakespeare for My Father (1993), her play about her desire to better understand her father. Her 2009 play, Nightingale, touched upon the life of her grandmother, Beatrice Kempson, and the end of her 32-year marriage to actor/director John Clark.
The marquees of Broadway will be dimmed tonight in her memory for one minute at 7 p.m.
On TV, she appeared in recent years in Ugly Betty, Law & Order and Desperate Housewives.
Unlike her siblings, both of whom were outspoken leftists, Lynn steered away from politics in favor of openness about her family, her marriage (it ended when she learned her husband fathered a child with the woman who would later become their son's wife) and her health. She was a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers. Her 2004 book, with daughter Annabel Clark, was about her fight with cancer, Journal: A Mother and Daughter's Recovery From Breast Cancer.
Despite her long illness, Redgrave's family said in a statement posted on her website Monday, "she lived, loved and worked harder than ever before."
