Let's face it.
No one ever remembers who takes home the most awards at the MuchMusic Video Awards.
Last year, for example, it was a triple win for critical punching bags Nickelback.
Who cares?
It was Lady Gaga who set the bar mighty high instead for memorable performances with her so-called "flaming boobies" display right at the end of the two-hour event.
If anyone can rise to the occasion this year, it's the following gals and guys lined up to perform at Sunday night's show at MuchMusic Queen and John HQ in Toronto, which is being broadcast live across the country.
First and foremost is co-host and performer Miley Cyrus, who has been drawing lots of attention of late for dressing provocatively and faking same-sex kisses in her live performances and Can't Be Tamed video. She's also currently embroiled in a flap with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who posted "up skirt" pictures of her exiting a car. Was she wearing underwear? Wasn't she? Who cares? As Cyrus told radio host Ryan Seacrest, "That's like, some idiot being an idiot." And Hilton, who for the record says she was, is a presenter at Sunday night's MMVAs, so expect there to be even more fuel thrown on this particular fire.
Katy Perry, who donned a blue wig and not much else for her recent MTV Movie Awards performance of her No. 1 hit California Gurls -- and whose video has whip cream shooting out of her bikini top -- also seems unable to censor herself. Witness her much talked about tweet on Lady Gaga's eating-rosary beads-and-crucifix-on-crotch-laden Alejandro video: "Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke." She later recanted: "I'm the hugest Lady Gaga fan but I'm also the hugest Jesus Christ fan!"
Ke$ha, again a highly theatrical and comic performer who wore a glow-in-the-dark costume and face makeup on a recent performance on SNL and in her video for Your Love is My Drug, featuring an older hippie boyfriend with questionable facial hair. The Guardian has called her "The Degenerate Hannah Montana." Bring it on, I say.
Adam Lambert, who doesn't shy away from same-sex kissing or crotch shots either for that matter -- if you recall his controversial American Music Awards performance last November. Leave it to Glambert to bring the, uh, glam.
Drake, the leading MMVA nominee with seven nods, Justin Bieber and Vancouver band Hedley, just behind Drake with six nods. I lump all three Canadian-bred boy wonders in together because they draw screaming girls, and in the case of the first two artists, have almost caused riots or near riots at their live performances. Let's keep it safe, people.
That leaves three more homegrown acts: Down With Webster, Marianas Trench and Stereos -- the latter who will perform during the red carpet portion of the show, to bring up the rear. "We like to do big, over-the-top performances," said DWW bassist-keyboardist Tyler Armes just hours before the band rehearsed on the MuchMusic lot on Thursday. "This is the biggest show we've ever played. It's extremely exciting. I'll probably have butterflies the day of the performance but it's definitely not intimidating, it's exciting. We're all big Drake fans. I especially have a crush on Katy Perry. I probably shouldn't say that. I'll take that back. I have a semi-crush on Katy Perry. All the performers, they're world class pop performers."
We can only hope.
