ABC is requesting a waiver from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) allowing them to ignore guarantees in their current writers' contracts in order to axe up to 20 original episodes a year from each of their three soaps, reports Daytime Confidential.
"All My Children," "One Life to Live" and "General Hospital" are the three soaps in question and part of a dwindling group of the staple of daytime TV. The reason ABC wants to axe up to 20 scripted episodes a year is to replace them with classic episodes as a way to promote special events, like the return of Vanessa Marcil to "General Hospital."
ABC has apparently made it known that if they don't receive the waiver, they'll be forced to fire one writer from each show. "ABC sees this as something that will help to keep the soaps on the air," says a source.
