"American Idol" is launching a preemptive strike in the wake of the U.K. talent show "The X Factor" admitting to using auto-tune in post-production.
"We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the 'American Idol' competition," producers said in a statement Thursday (Aug. 26). Having attended 'Idol,' we can absolutely say that's true (zing!).
And across the pond, after coming under fire for admitting to use auto-tune, "X Factor" producers have pledged to do away with its use in the future. "There will be no auto-tune in the audition shows or for competitive performances on live shows," a spokeswoman tells the BBC.
Simon Cowell, producer and judge behind both shows, has been taking a lot of heat in the British press over the auto-tune scandal, but since he has left "Idol," we imagine people will be more curious about whether the U.S. "X Factor" uses it.
We think "American Idol" actually should use auto-tune -- in one of their patented montages, they should take bad singers and show us how they sounded originally and then show us how they sound after auto-tune. It beats the heck out of listening to 20 singers in a row try to sing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or whatever is the montage du jour song in that particular audition city. Make it happen, FOX.
