"How I Met Your Mother" hasn't earned a ton of Emmy nominations over the years, but it's made the most of the chances it has received.
The TV academy provided breakdowns of nominations and wins for every series up for an Emmy in 2010, and Zap2it decided to do a little number-crunching to see which shows have the best ratio of wins to nominations. Somewhat surprisingly, almost no show in this year's field has done better in that regard than "HIMYM."
OK, one show has, and it's another you might not expect: "Chuck." It was only nominated for three Emmys in its first two seasons, but it won twice -- both for outstanding stunt coordination. But the sample size is pretty small.
"How I Met Your Mother" earned 11 Emmy nominations over its first four seasons and won five, or 45.4 percent of the time. It has a mini-dynasty going in the category of outstanding art direction for a multi-camera series, having won the award for the past four years. It also won for best multi-camera cinematography in 2006. (In all cases in this post, percentages are based on nominations and wins through 2009, since the 2010 awards haven't happened yet.)
"Monk" also has a pretty good record -- seven Emmys in 16 nominations (43.8 percent) prior to 2010. Star Tony Shalhoub has won three times, and the show also has two Emmys for best main title theme music (for two different tunes) and two for outstanding guest actor in a comedy (Stanley Tucci in 2007 and John Turturro in 2004).
Among the nominees for best comedy and drama series this year, "Breaking Bad" has the highest winning percentage (4 wins in 9 nominations, or 44.4 percent), while "Lost" (12 of 39), "30 Rock" (14 of 49) and "Mad Men" (9 of 32) all hover between 28 percent and 31 percent. "True Blood" went 1-for-3 in its first eligible season last year, but as with "Chuck," it's a pretty small sample size.
"Dexter" (2 of 11, 22.2 percent) and "The Office" (4 of 31, 12.9 percent) have been less lucky in their Emmy careers, but no best series nominee for 2010 has been more shunned than "Curb Your Enthusiasm," which has just one win -- for directing in 2003 -- in 30 nominations prior to this year.
"Curb" up for four Emmys this year, including outstanding comedy series. We'll see whether it can make that 2003 award less lonely over the next couple of weeks; the Creative Arts Emmys are Saturday (Aug. 21), and the Primetime Emmys air Aug. 29 on NBC.
