On Monday, Sept. 20, NBC premieres the action thriller "Chase," which features Jesse Metcalfe ("Desperate Housewives") as Luke Watson, the newest member of the U.S. Marshals Service's Houston Enforcement & Apprehension Task Force (H.E.A.T.).
"He comes from an affluent family," says Metcalfe of Watson, "and his father's somewhat of a political bigshot, although I don't know specifically what he does. That's why Luke joined the U.S. Marshals Service, to make his father proud, to prove himself to his father, to get out from under his father's shadow."
But before "Chase" launches, fans can see Metcalfe leave politics behind for very different reasons in the Hallmark Channel movie "Fairfield Road," premiering Saturday, Sept. 11.
"I play a character named Noah McManus," Metcalfe says. "He's a political aide to the mayor of Boston. He's very ambitious and also very idealistic, which doesn't survive too well. Quickly, he becomes disenchanted with working for with the mayor of Boston, because she's deviated from her core values that made him want to work for her.
"All basically in a day, he interviews to be the new legislative director for a senator in Washington, D.C., but that opportunity falls through because the senator is accepting illegal campaign contributions, so he no longer has a job.
"And this same day, he also finds out that his fiancee has been cheating on him. So he loses everything."
McManus heads to the small Cape Cod town of Harpswell, where he had intended to propose, to pick up the engagement ring he had sent to a bed-and-breakfast there. He winds up having to stay the night, and something unexpected happens (OK, maybe it's not THAT unexpected, since it's a Hallmark movie).
"He falls in love with the town and gets into the community politics," says Metcalfe. "It's basically a story about finding yourself, finding what's really important to you. It's about small-town values and politics.
"It's a very strong reminder to maintain your ethics."
Asked if he looks in the mirror and wonders why he got hired for two roles connected to politics, Metcalfe laughs.
"Maybe it means I look smart?"
