This year's MTV Video Music Awards was marked by big wins (Lady Gaga!) and big performances (Eminem and Rihanna!).
But what will certainly have music fans buzzing all week is part two of the long-simmering feud between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. Over the course of Sunday's show from L.A.'s Nokia Theater, the two (separately) took the stage and performed personal, unreleased songs that, at least in the context of the show, pointedly addressed last year's stage-crashing by West.
Swift performed first, and unveiled a dark folk song, praising innocence. "It's all right, just wait and see. Your string of lights is still bright to me. You're still an innocent," she sang.
West, who closed out the show, hit a different note.
His song, "Runaway," featured a self-deprecating refrain: "Let's have a toast for the douchebags," he rapped. "Let's have a toast for the a------s. Let's have a toast for the scumbags. Let's have a toast for the jerk---s. Baby, I got a plan. Runaway fast as you can."
With the two (seemingly) self-referential new tunes from the performers, who won't be talking about them days after this year's VMAs?
