When Season 2 of "Life Unexpected" begins, Ryan (Kerr Smith) and Cate (Shiri Appleby) have just returned from their honeymoon, with tag-along Lux (Britt Robertson) along for the ride. Just don't expect the honeymoon stage to last very long.
When Zap2it paid an exclusive visit to the show's Vancouver set, Smith said that Team Ryan may take a hit this year.
"Well, let's see," Smith laughs. "We rushed the wedding. We don't really know each other all that well. We've both got secrets piling up. Listen, the first year of any marriage is rocky, but with Ryan and Cate, it's as rocky as they get."
At the radio station where they both work, things are just as messy as they are at home. "Cate and Ryan live together and work together, and it can get hard to separate work stuff from home stuff," he says. "That can create some friction in a marriage."
Last season focused on introducing viewers Cate, Baze, and Lux -- and whatever baggage came with them. Now, we're going to learn a bit more about Ryan... and we might not like what we find out. "I'll just say that he's not as good of a guy as he might have led you to believe," Smith says. "He's not a villain or anything, but he's not who you think he is. He might not be who Cate thinks he is. Who doesn't have secrets? He's got some skeletons in his closet, definitely."
Uh-oh. He can't be that bad of a guy, though, because he's willing to forgive Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) for crashing his wedding moments before the kiss. Kerr explains that Ryan and Baze will come to an understanding this season. "There's a part of Baze in Ryan. Maybe earlier in his life, Ryan was that guy - the partier, the guy who takes the bong hits, the drinker. At some point, he decided to grow up and become a professional, responsible adult, and Baze did not."
Despite a bumpy road with Cate, Ryan's relationship with Lux is safe. "I think their relationship is as close as you can get, father-daughter wise, even though he's her stepdad," he says. "I love doing scenes with Britt. They're always very heartfelt."
