Maggie Q had her doubts about wearing the red bikini.
"Girls look sexy in bikinis, it's fine and that whole thing," said Q, referring to a sequence in the first episode of Nikita. "But I was fighting for a one-piece. I was like, 'Let's be classy, it'll be cool.' "
Well, upon very, very close examination, the red bikini actually is a one-piece ... technically.
"Sometimes I feel like, when you lack something else, it's all about showing off your assets," Q said. "If you've got something internal, you don't need to run around with no clothes all the time."
Be that as it may, the new series Nikita - which films in Toronto and debuts Thursday, Sept. 9, on CW and A, immediately after the second-season debut of The Vampire Diaries - will offer Q a wide variety of apparel in which to pummel people.
"Oh, totally - are you kidding, in the winter in Toronto?" Q said. "Screw all of you, I'm wearing a balaclava, I don't care if they can't tell who I am."
Maggie Q - real name Margaret Quigley - is an American actress, born in Hawaii, who already is an international action-genre star. Following a brief career as a model, she first gained fame in Hong Kong when she was discovered by Jackie Chan.
"They couldn't pronounce (Quigley) in Asia," Q said of her name change. "That's all that happened. So they shortened it."
Q was a runner and a swimmer as a youngster, but she had no experience in martial arts prior to getting into show business.
"I've done action movies, but I've never done an action-television show, which is a whole other deal," said Q, who has appeared in films such as Mission Impossible III and Live Free or Die Hard.
"We have action in every episode. I don't do anything but sleep when I'm not working. I have no life. I'm no fun. All I want to do is sleep and get ready for the next day."
Hmmm, sounds just like the title character in Nikita.
As a troubled teen, Nikita was rescued from death row by a secret U.S. agency known as Division, which trained her as an assassin. Nikita eventually escaped Division and after three years in hiding, she is determined to destroy the corrupt covert operation.
Concurrently, Division continues to recruit cornered young people, including Alex, played by Lyndsy Fonseca (you may remember Fonseca as the daughter of Dana Delany's character on Desperate Housewives).
The 31-year-old Q understands that people see her primarily as an action star, although she does have dreams of cracking that stereotype as her career moves forward.
"I think that comes in time," she said. "If everything I did in the industry were entirely up to me, wouldn't that be great?
"But we have to take what comes when there are great opportunities (such as Nikita), and when we want to break stereotypes there's a time for that, too. But to break stereotypes you need power, or a semblance of power."
Trust us, all it will take is a few minutes of Nikita to convince you that Maggie Q has more than a semblance of power.
"I don't know that guys love it," admitted Q, when asked if men are attracted to women who can kick butt. "I think guys like it in theory."
Have you ever kicked a guy's butt?
"Not on purpose," said Q, prompting laughter. "It happens sometimes by accident."
