"Five years for the daytime show, five years for the magazine and five years married!" she says.
A new season of her Rachael Ray talk/cook show kicks off Monday with a visit to Kim Kardashian's new Los Angeles home (she bought it in March).
"I was the first person to ever turn on a stove at Kim's house," says Ray, whose syndicated show averages 1.9 million viewers a day.
She and Kim were joined by most of the Kardashian clan, including mom Kris and sister Kourtney and her baby Mason. "We even talked to Khloe (Kardashian) and Lamar (Odom), who were off in Turkey on their honeymoon. We had the best day. I feel like an unofficial Kardashian cousin."
She prepared a pasta dish and says, "There wasn't a crumb left." Ray left behind laminated recipe cards to help Kim do more of her own cooking. And she says that Kim's stepdad, Bruce Jenner, also stopped by. "He promised to give me flying lessons, so we may tackle that project at some point."
Karadashian is one of many celebs booked for this season of Rachael Ray, including Will Arnett, Keri Russell, Ted Danson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julianne Moore, Jim Belushi, Whoopi Goldberg, Nancy Grace, Patricia Heaton, Dr. Travis Stork, Bethenny Frankel, Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Ty Pennington, Julie Bowen and Steve Harvey.
What about her mentor Oprah Winfrey? "I'll invite her on," says Ray. "I'd love to see her this fall." But she also knows Oprah is a little busy with her farewell season. "I got a little goosebumpy watching the promos," says Ray. "I got a little choked up."
But she says her show won't be all about celebrities. "We'll have many more single-topic shows," she says. "Today we had a story about a young girl who was diagnosed with cancer at 11 and then taught herself how to play the guitar."
In addition to the show and to celebrating five years of her Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine, Ray, who turned 42 in August, will prepare a special anniversary meal for her husband, lawyer John Cusimano. "I couldn't do a fifth-anniversary show here at the show without thinking of our fifth anniversary," she says. Chef Buddy Valastro, from TLC show Cake Boss, is desigining a cake that will look like the castle in Tuscany in which they got married.
As for what special meal she'll make, she says, "John is still thinking it over. His favorite dish is carbonara — bacon and eggs spaghetti. At our wedding we had filet with a Brunello sauce, because we got married at the Brunello di Montalcino castle, home of the Brunello wine. I might do some sort of riff on that. I don't know. I am Italian girl, I gotta keep him happy."
John went with Rach on her recent trip to L.A. to visit the Kardashians and film a segment on L.A. food trucks (look for Jerry O'Connell and other stars in that segment.).
"All in all it was a whirlwind trip," Ray says, noting that one of their favorite places to go was the Equinox gym, with its "chilled towels scented with eucalyptus." Ever since she had a throat cyst removed a year ago, Ray says she's amped up her exercise, working out first thing every morning.
While Rachael Ray is kicking off this week, she'll be jetting off to Europe on Wednesday. "We always go back to Italy where we got married and bring a group of friends. But this year, the castle is closed for renovation, so my husband is working on a plan."
But Ray, who has also been working on a new show for the Cooking Channel called Rachael Ray's Week in a Day, premiering Sept. 25, and a new Look and Cook multimedia book coming out Nov. 5, wouldn't mind a New York staycation. "I'm kind of tuckered out. I wouldn't mind napping with the dog. I daydream about sleep."
