Finally, we've got some new "Supernatural" footage to work with! The Sept. 24 premiere is just two short weeks away. After a year of living in domestic bliss with his girlfriend and her kid, Dean (Jensen Ackles) will find out that Sam (Jared Padalecki) has been alive all along. Seeing as Dean has presumably been grieving for his brother all along, this is sure to go over spectacularly.
In the Season 6 promo released by The CW, Dean seems relatively happy playing dad and driving an unfamiliar pickup truck, but when Sam shows up, we're pretty sure he doesn't bring good news with him. After a year of hiding from Dean, it'll take something serious for Sam to drag his brother back into hunting.
We're guessing Dean won't be easily pulled away, but we can't ignore the moment in the promo clip when Dean cries, "This is happening because of me!"
Zap2it was on the scene with series stars Padalecki and Ackles at Creation Entertainment's Salute to "Supernatural" in Vancouver when Ackles discussed Dean's involvement in the show's overarching storyline. If the 20-second promo is anything to go by, Dean will be a major catalyst for Season 6's arc.
"I was happy that Dean was part of the mythology finally," he says of Season 5, when Dean grappled with the temptation to host the archangel Michael. "For four seasons he was just the older brother trying to keep the younger brother from going darkside. "Now I finally had purpose."
That said, Ackles is glad that he never actually had to play Michael. "Phew. Dodged that bullet," he says.
Padalecki, on the other hand, is happy to explore characters other than Sam. "Yes, I was happy to play the devil. What's wrong with me?" he laughs. "Any time I get a chance to explore a new character, new motivations, it's fun and exciting, however it was very tough. It was hard to do the mirror scenes."
When a fan asks Padalecki how he'll play Sam differently this year, now that he's been through hell and a year without his brother, Padalecki replies, "You ever hold your hand over your eyes and spin a globe and put your finger down and say there, that's where I'm gonna go? That's how I'm going to do it."
More seriously, he adds, "We see a difference in Sam, a sort of maturity. He's seen hell with the devil, as the devil, in a cage. So that'll change you. He's not gonna come back and be like 'Hey, how you doing, let's get some ice cream!' I'm still learning as well. I have my ideas, and the writers have theirs. "
"Sam's different, but we don't know why," Ackles says.
