Reigning dancing queen Jennifer Grey was unseated for the second time this season, when Brandy earned top honors at Dancing with the Stars Monday night.
It was TV theme week, and Brandy's energetic quickstep with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy to the Friends theme mirrored the duo's growing bond. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba complimented the singer on finally being able to trust her partner and herself, and Len Goodman called their routine "without doubt your best performance." The judges dished out straight nines to the new friends.
Still, Grey and partner Derek Hough proved that, despite falling to the No. 2 spot in week five, they are nonetheless a force on the dance floor. The duo earned two eights and a nine after a week of rehearsals dogged by frustration and the pressure to stay on top. Bruno Tonioli called their foxtrot to "Love and Marriage" (from Married With Children) "pristine, elegant and beautifully danced." But Carrie Ann noted the routine simply wasn't their best.
Meanwhile, the athletes tied for third place this week with each man earning all eights. Len called NFL MVP Kurt Warner's Bewitched-inspired routine with Anna Trebunskaya, "a vast improvement and a great performance." But Rick Fox displayed equal improvement during his rumba with Cheryl Burke to the theme song from NYPD Blue. "You went from Megatron to mega-smooth," Bruno joked to the NBA star.
Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani landed in the middle of the pack for their rumba inspired by The Hills. Bruno said their routine lacked passion.
"Rumba has to smolder," he advised. "Don't be plastic – be fantastic!"
On the lower end of the leader board, Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas earned sevens for their tango to the theme from – what else? – The Brady Bunch, while Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer's foxtrot garnered only 20 points.
"That was a joke," Len declared of the Charlie's Angels routine. "I couldn't stand it."
But the evening's lowest scores went to birthday girl Bristol Palin, who turned 20 on Monday. Her jive with Mark Ballas to the theme song from The Monkees, during which the partners stripped out of gorilla costumes, had the judges criticizing Bristol's lack of technique. The no-longer-teen mom earned straight sixes for her efforts.
