David Letterman is sorry Rachael Ray left his Late Show with a bad taste in her mouth.
On Tuesday night, the talk-show host took a moment to apologize to the culinary star for ranting during Ray's taped appearance about the glut of TV food programming while millions starve.
"No, I'm not mad at Rachael," Letterman said in response to an email he had received from Ray's publicist asking if he was upset with her. "I'm just nuts. There's something wrong with me. So, if you see Rachael, tell her I'm sorry. She didn't do anything wrong."
Yet Letterman couldn't help but, once again, address the issue that got him so fired up to begin with.
"A billion people are starving, 50 million people are starving in this country. They go to bed hungry, but before they doze off, let's watch Cupcake Wars. Does that make any sense?" he asked.
He went on to complain about a show where "a guy goes around and he tries to eat himself sick" while pointing out that "in parts of Africa, kids eat dirt just so their stomachs have a full feeling."
Letterman then brought the discussion back to his behavior toward Ray to reiterate that he had no hard feelings.
"Not mad at her," he again clarified. "There really is something wrong with me. I don't know what it is and I'm seeking professional help...Rachael, I'm very sorry. I got carried away. I'll admit, you had every reason to be alarmed. I'm so sorry."
Ray's taped segment will air Friday.
