After three episodes of heavy forward movement, Monday's (Oct. 11) installment "The Event" slowed down a little to set up the next bit of business. Which leaves us more time to notice things like the incredibly convoluted baiting of a trap for Sean.
Vicky and Carter's endgame in this episode was to have Leila contact Sean. But rather than, say just leaving a phone down in the basement for Leila to find, they instead:
- Purposely left a shard of broken beer bottle in the basement so Leila could saw through the rope binding her hands. Good thing she didn't use it as a weapon when she attacked Vicky.
- Loaded their guns with blanks so that when Leila wrestled the gun away from Vicky and shot her, Vicky wouldn't get hurt.
- Killed a couple of cops so their guys could pick Leila up and take her to the station, where she then called Sean (whose cell battery was dead. D'oh!).
And, for good measure, their operative in Yuma whacked an innocent man (who, it appeared, hadn't even seen the bad guy) in order to steal his car and chase after Sean and Agent Collier. For super-secret bad guys, they're making an awfully public mess of things.
Sean, meanwhile, is collecting pieces of the puzzle at a pretty good clip for a guy on the run with only a laptop, a dying phone and a still-skeptical FBI agent to his credit. He and Collier track Vicky through one of her aliases to Texas, but the show pulls a "Silence of the Lambs" and they end up not at the place where Leila is being held, but at the home of Vicky's mother (and son!). Sean has a picture of young Adam, which we're guessing will come in handy if he ever finds a place to recharge his phone.
On the Washington side of things, the passengers are all suffering some serious memory loss after waking up from being not quite dead. Sterling is questioning Michael Buchanan about who forced him to fly the plane at the president -- he's able to remember Vicky's name -- and the vice president is not happy about it. The veep gets served, however, as Sterling notes that thinking he had something to do with the plot to kill Martinez is absurd -- "if only because that would put you in charge." Yeah, he did.
Meanwhile, the passengers soon all start having bloody noses. Wait -- I know this one! They've all been on the island before, and the jumping around in space-time is scrambling their brains, right? Oh ... wait. Different show.
Otherwise, we're pretty much status quo with the president and the NTOs, despite the ominous phone call from Thomas and Sophia's urging Martinez to do whatever Thomas wants. He's powerful, yes, but until the president (and we, the viewing people) know what he wants to do other than threaten people and move a plane around, it feels like kind of an empty threat.
The slowing down of "The Event" was probably necessary after the breakneck pace of the past two episodes, but if we're fixating on the mechanics of things, that's maybe not a good sign. What did you think of the episode?
