Leave it to Beaver star Barbara Billingsley has died.
The 94-year-old was perhaps best known for her role as devoted mother and housewife June Cleaver between 1957 and 1963. She also appeared in the movie Airplane and other television shows such as Mork & Mindy, The Love Boat, Muppet Babies, Empty Nest, Murphy Brown and Still the Beaver.
Billingsley's spokeswoman Judy Twersky said in an e-mail to QMI Agency that Billingsley died Saturday morning in her Santa Monica home after a long illness.
"America's favorite mother is now gone. I feel very fortunate to have been her 'son' for 11 years. We were wonderful friends and I will miss her very much. My deepest sympathies to her sons, Glenn and Drew, and her entire family," actor Tony Dow, who played Wally Cleaver, said in a statement release by Twersky.
She was born in 1915 in Los Angeles, California and worked as a model before she began acting in the 1940s.
She was married three times to Glenn Billingsley, Roy Kellino and William Mortensen. She and Billingsley had two sons, Drew and Glenn, who run the Billingsley Steakhouse in Los Angeles.
"Our mom was truly the best mother. She was every bit as nurturing, classy, and lovely as 'June Cleaver' and we were so proud to share her with the world," Glenn Billingsley said in the statement.
