Do you remember when Steve Martin used to play the banjo to be funny, not because he wanted to be a serious musician?
We longed for those days while watching the Just For Laughs special hosted by Martin, which airs Monday, Oct. 18 on CBC.
Younger viewers who know Martin only from recent projects would be shocked to discover just how hilarious he was back in his wild-and-crazy-guy heyday.
We still love the 65-year-old Martin for providing a lifetime of laughs, but at some point in the past few years he apparently became quite bored with comedy and decided to focus on music.
He actually looks kind of sour through his Just For Laughs appearance. It's as if the jokes are intruding on the time he'd rather spend playing music with his buddies, who he has brought along and foisted upon the audience, of course.
Now, no one expects Martin - or any aging comedian - to keep up the frantic insanity forever.
But we really could have lived without hearing a bluegrass version of King Tut, you know?
