The last episode of "Chuck" featured the revelation of this season's big villain, sure. But equally important, it also left Chuck (Zachary Levi) without the Intersect in his head -- so what is he without it?
"I think it brings up a whole host of issues we're interested in exploring," co-creator Chris Fedak tells Zap2it. "Is he still a spy without the Intersect? Is he still a hero without it? ... And has Chuck learned enough spy skills over the past couple of seasons to get him along in the spy world?"
Monday's (Nov. 15) episode, "Chuck vs. the Fear of Death," starts to address that question. Chuck, who after all lost the Intersect thanks to his own mother, is suffering a crisis of confidence and wants to get it back no matter what.
Enter Jim Rye (guest star Rob Riggle), a gung-ho agent who Fedak says is "the leading expert in regard to trying to restart the Intersect." His methods, however, are a little unconventional: "He's going to employ a therapy called F.O.D. -- Fear of Death," Fedak says. "That takes Chuck into some really exciting places."
The Swiss Alps, for one. Chuck and Rye go on a mission to Switzerland that Fedak says includes a "'Moonraker'-esque" action piece set on a gondola in the Swiss Alps. "It's maybe the most effects work we've ever done in a sequence," Fedak says.
The episode will also introduce Richard Chamberlain ("The Thorn Birds") as a bad guy named Alfred De Smet, aka "The Belgian," and it also guest stars Summer Glau as the latest "Greta" stationed at the Buy More. Her real identity becomes a subject of interest to the non-CIA employees of the store, and things go a little sideways. But it also sets the stage for a "Firefly" reunion between Glau and Adam Baldwin.
"We love the idea that we can get someone like Summer Glau to come in and do the show," Fedak says. "She's great, and it was fun for us to write a scene with Summer and Adam together again."
"Chuck vs. the Fear of Death" airs at 8 p.m. ET Monday on NBC.
