Dr. Mehmet Oz raised eyebrows Wednesday night when he presented Julio Palmaz, inventor of the heart stent, with an award after he'd warned of its "danger" on his Fox show earlier in the week. Oz called attention to possible risks of the tube used to keep the arteries open, calling it "the most unnecessary heart procedure." But the next night, Oz praised Palmaz for his medical contributions, including the stent, at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation's annual Pulse of the City Gala. "It was ironic watching Dr. Oz as he was surrounded by leaders in intravascular cardiology who have helped with the breakthroughs the stent has made," a guest said. Oz's rep told us, "Dr. Oz has performed thousands of stent operations. What he was saying is that a lot of people who get them don't really need one. He's not saying he doesn't believe in them; he's saying that people who are told to get one should seek a second opinion."
