"The Event" returns to NBC Monday (Nov. 8) with an episode that, among other things will delve a lot deeper into the relationship between extraterrestrials Sophia (Laura Innes) and Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.).
To put it succinctly, it's complicated. Innes says that even though her character and Thomas may want the same thing, they go about it in very different ways.
"I think she's completely opposed to his methods, because they're basically -- you know, he's a terrorist and he wants to harm and abuse innocent people," Innes says. "Her first choice would be a diplomatic, peaceful resolution to a conflict. Now if that's not possible, then she's willing to take the next step, but I think that she will do almost anything to avoid harming [anyone] -- especially harming people who are innocent."
Which is not to say she'll shy away from a tough decision. Now that Sophia is out in the world, she'll face a new set of challenges, executive producer Evan Katz says.
"Obviously she's a leader for a reason," Katz says. "You're going to see her steal. You're going to see the difficult and sometimes shocking and ugly things a leader has to do. But her moral compass -- I think she's essentially been a very honest character. But in the next couple of episodes you're going to learn what her true relationship with Thomas is, what her real priorities are now that she's out and ... a little bit more about the structure and challenges to her leadership."
Innes also notes one other advantage to having Sophia be free from confinement: She gets to change clothes.
"Evan and the gang gave her a great scene with the character of Thomas, and you start to see her really express her real feelings" in Monday's episode, she say. "So that was fun to do. It's fun for her to be out. It's fun for me to be able to wear different outfits. That's always nice."
"The Event" airs at 9 p.m. ET Monday on NBC.
