The thrilling Canadian television series Flashpoint failed to dominate the Gemini Awards as expected. Despite leading with 15 nominations, Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern's police procedural scored only two wins Sunday.
One went to David Frazee for directing the Season 2 episode One Wrong Move, the other to veteran actor Michael Riley as best guest star in his category. Overall, Flashpoint lost as best dramatic series to the final season of The Tudors. Henry VIII still wields his kingly privileges.
From a home entertainment perspective, however, both Flashpoint and The Tudors are equal winners. Last week, before the awards, The Tudors: The Complete Fourth Season came to Blu-ray and DVD. So did The Royal Collection on DVD-only, collecting the four seasons in one box.
In the case of Flashpoint, the DVDs arrived this week. You can choose between Flashpoint: The Complete Second Season, or the more narrow Season 2, Vol. 2 (Vol. 1 debuted in March).
I always prefer complete-season sets to split-season ones. With Flashpoint, collectors get the option. Season 2, as a complete set, offers 18 episodes directed by a strong directorial roster, among them Frazee with six episodes. Other significant talent includes Holly Dale and Charle Biname.
The acting ensemble remains dynamic, led by Hugh Dillon, David Paetkau and Amy Jo Johnson. Dillon's stoic role is quite different from his lead on another admirable Canadian series, Durham County, which also has two full seasons available on DVD. All these shows are an indication that Canada is in a golden age for top-notch television series, despite the economy, despite political machinations, despite the frustrations felt by guilds and unions, despite the interference of government bureaucrats. Real artists are at work.
