WINNIPEG - Polar bears aren't the only celebrities in Manitoba's north this weekend.
Domestic diva Martha Stewart is in Churchill and has been musing about her visit to the isolated northern community on Twitter, a social-networking and microblogging website.
Her three-day stop in Churchill, about 1,000 km northeast of Winnipeg on the shore of Hudson Bay, has created a buzz in town and drawn the attention of Canadian media.
One of her stops around town was Gypsy's Restaurant and Bakery, where she ate breakfast and bought some desserts, including apple fritters and eclairs.
Stewart spent some time at the bakery chatting with co-owner Tony Da Silva and others Saturday.
"She was very polite and we really enjoyed to serve her," Da Silva said. "She's a very calm lady, a very nice lady."
Da Silva said he and Stewart talked about food and Churchill.
"We are in the middle of nowhere and when we have a celebrity here it is very nice," he said.
Stewart — whose business empire includes magazines, books, merchandise and the Martha Stewart Show on television — and a crew arrived Friday to film polar bears.
Stewart's presence has provided some good advertising for the town and its world-famous attraction. Her Twitter feed is followed by more than two million users.
Since her arrival in Churchill she has posted several messages and photos of her experience.
The first photo she shared was of herself, bundled up and standing in front of a polar bear holding facility, where tranquilized bears that wander too close to town are held until they are returned to the wild.
She then posted photos of a sedated polar bear, enclosed in a net, being returned to its habitat by helicopter.
"The sedated polar bear about to wake up after being returned to the tundra from town," Stewart wrote alongside one photo.
She also Tweeted about her visit to Gypsy's and a helicopter tour of Cape Churchill on Saturday.
Later, she boarded a tundra buggy to cruise through Wapusk National Park to get a glimpse of polar bears.
