ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Actor Ted Danson told federal regulators at a hearing in Alaska that more scientific research is needed before drilling is allowed in the Arctic Ocean off the state's northern shores.
Danson said Tuesday night that research could help determine how the entire ecosystem works. He suggested it could be done with a $20 million annual investment over the next five years.
The longtime environmental activist testified in Anchorage at a hearing of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement.
Environmental and Alaska Native groups oppose drilling in Arctic waters, which lack a deep-water port and other infrastructure that could be useful for cleanup of a large spill.
Shell, a major leaseholder in Arctic waters, contends drilling can be done safely.
