After nearly 4,500 broadcasts on CBS, long-time Early Show anchor Harry Smith signed off the morning program for the last time Friday.
Smith's final edition featured a look back at his combined 17 years at the morning anchor desk. He described his feeling as "one of gratitude, absolute gratitude" and he thanked his family for dealing with his demanding schedule over the years.
The 59-year-old Smith served as co-anchor of CBS This Morning from 1987 to 1996 and returned to the renamed Early Show in 2002. His final episode also included a taped tribute from Oprah Winfrey. "You hold the viewers, me being one of them, in the highest of esteem," she said.
CBS announced a complete overhaul of the Early Show team in November. Beginning Monday, weekend anchors Chris Wragge and Erica Hill will take over anchor duty and Jeff Glor will be the news reader. Marysol Castro, the former weather and feature correspondent for the weekend edition of Good Morning America, will also join the program. In addition to Smith, the new team replaces co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez and weatherman Dave Price.
Smith will remain with CBS as the primary substitute for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, Face the Nation and CBS Sunday Morning.
The Early Show has long been the third-rated morning program behind NBC's Today and ABC's Good Morning America.
Are you sad to see Smith and the rest of the team go?
