{alltv} 'Hawaii Five-0' and the NFL: The fall's most and least DVR'd shows

DVR use may have gone up this fall compared to last, but the shows people are recording haven't changed a whole lot.

"Hawaii Five-0" began the 2010-11 season as the most DVR'd show on television, and it's kept that title through 11 weeks. CBS' crime show is adding an average of almost 3.2 million viewers per episode, according to Nielsen's "live-plus-7" ratings. The show's same-day average audience is 11.5 million people, but that jumps to 14.7 million with a week of DVR use, a gain of 27.7 percent.

It will be interesting to see if people keep recording "Five-0" at such a high rate once the new year starts or if, once "Monday Night Football" ends and that audience is freed up, a few more people start watching the show in its regular timeslot.

For the most part, shows that do well with live viewers also are pretty heavily recorded: "The Mentalist," "Modern Family," "Glee" and "NCIS" are all among the top 10 in viewers added, while the latter three, plus "The Big Bang Theory" and "Five-0," are also among the biggest gainers in the adults 18-49 demographic. ("Modern Family" and "Grey's Anatomy" tie for the lead in the demo, each gaining an additional 1.4 points in live-plus-7 viewing.)

The glaring exception is live sports, which occupy the bottom five spots on the DVR charts. NBC's "Sunday Night Football," for instance, is currently the No. 1 show on TV this season, but its audience consists almost entirely of live viewers; it adds only 34,000 viewers to its total in the live-plus-7 ratings.

ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" doesn't do much DVR business either. The Monday performance episodes added an average of just 858,000 viewers per week in the fall, while the Tuesday results shows tacked on only 647,000 more people via delayed viewing. (The least DVR'd scripted show is FOX's "Running Wilde," which adds only 344,000 viewers per episode.)

In terms of percentages, NBC's "Parenthood" is by far the biggest beneficiary of DVR use. It grows by 39 percent in total viewers in live-plus-7 viewing (4.96 million to 6.9 million) and a whopping 45 percent in its adults 18-49 rating (2.0 to 2.9). Whether that improves the show's case for renewal remains to be seen -- its same-day numbers are pretty shaky, but the DVR-added figures are respectable in NBC's current climate.
