TGIT! For the first time since its 2003 debut, makeover series What Not to Wear leaves Friday to take up residence on Tuesday evenings. (9/8c, TLC. Tonight's target: a law student who could double as a pole dancer.) In honor of the big move, hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly share some holiday fashion do's and don'ts to keep you off their naughty list.
DON'T BE TOO LITERAL
In an effort to look festive, it's easy to go overboard. "Be careful of cliché colors like bright red and green — it's not sophisticated," warns Kelly. Better bets? Metallics and jewel tones. Your goal should be the same as always: flattering, seasonally appropriate styles. "You're not trying to be a Christmas elf," says London.
DO TRANSITION FROM AM TO PM
"Change up your outfit for an evening party by packing a bag with what you'll need: statement jewelry, a clutch bag and a great pair of shoes," says Kelly. For men, London recommends mixing complementary colors and prints like a checked shirt with a brightly striped tie and pocket square.
DON'T TAKE THE "OFFICE" OUT OF YOUR OFFICE PARTY
Sure, the eggnog is gonna be a-flowing and you're ready to blow off steam. Just remember, "You are still an employee of your company!" says London. Some pointers: "Skirt length should be at the knee or below, and don't show too much cleavage — keep the soft tissue covered," says Kelly.
DO GO NUTS ON NEW YEAR'S
When December 31 rolls around, ditch the rules. "Go ahead and dress like the New Year's Eve disco ball — it's OK," says Kelly. Adds London, "There are three times to go all out: New Year's Eve, Halloween and when you're in Vegas. Be celebratory!"
