Glee may be known primarily for its heart, but Jane Lynch promises this weekend's highly anticipated post-Super Bowl episode will pack a punch. (Don't read on if you don't want any spoilers.)
"We're kind of doing an episode of Glee that is on steroids," Lynch told reporters during a recent conference call, promising that her character, Sue Sylvester, will be even meaner than usual in an episode that also features McKinley High's glee club, the Cheerios and footballers teaming up as zombies for a "Thriller"-themed halftime show.
"Sue Sylvester is a little bored with her routine even though she has kids riding around on BMX bikes and jumping through fire in this one routine to Katy Perry's 'California Gurls,' " Lynch says of the episode's opening number, which some costars have called the show's most difficult dance routine yet. "She wants to top herself."
So Sue purchases a human cannon with the intention of shooting out airheaded cheerleader Brittany. But when Principal Figgins puts the kibosh on Sue's scheming, she throws two tantrums.
Says Lynch: "It was definitely Sue Sylvester on the warpath."
The consequences of her actions during the Super Bowl episode will play out throughout the end of this season as her character suffers a loss with the Cheerios.
"She becomes very, very depressed, and she becomes kind of dangerously depressed, where she's more violent than usual," says Lynch.
To lift the curmudgeonly cheer coach's spirits, the glee kids convince her to join up.
"I'm actually in the glee club for a while," says Lynch. "They find that through raising her voice in song, it kind of lifts her and she gets out of her depression."
