The 44-year-old star of "The Young and the Restless" was pulled over on the eastbound 101 at Laurel Canyon Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Harris.
He was allegedly driving a silver Porsche at about 90 mph, prompting the traffic stop, Harris said.
St. John was given a field sobriety test, then was booked at the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys jail for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, Harris said.
St. John was released Sunday night after posting $5,000 bail, TMZ.com reported.
St. John has played business executive Neil Winters on daytime drama "Y&R" for 20 years, according to Wikipedia. His credits include the soap "Generations," "The Cosby Show," "Happy Days," and "Roots: The Next Generations," on which he played Alex Haley as a boy.
He has been nominated for eight Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on "Generations" and "The Young and the Restless," winning two (2008, 1992) — both for his Neil Winters role on "Y&R."
