Nothing gets by the eagle eyes and deep memories of "Grey's Anatomy" fans, so when the ABC show apparently used "love scene" footage from a previous season in the March 24 episode, hardcore fans cried foul and demanded answers.
"It was not a love scene, it was a shot," creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes explains to TVLine.com of the reused footage.
Rhimes says that the episode needed another beat with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), but the two were unavailable to shoot it at the time. "We would've had to drag them [back to the set] from places we couldn't drag them in from to do one shot," she says.
Rhimes decided to insert the shot from Season 5 (we believe, but we're sure you'll correct us) and says that isn't strange in the "Grey's" world.
"We've used the shot of Derek standing on the catwalk from the pilot like 700 times," she explains. "It was just a shot. I would never recycle an entire scene. [But] I love that the fans are so invested in the show that they noticed. After seven seasons I take that as a true compliment that they got outraged."
