So The Nature of Things is 50 years old? What the heck does it think it is, Coronation Street?
Well, whether you're sitting in a pub or trying to save the world, TV shows that last five decades are a rare breed indeed. As far as The Nature of Things is concerned, the occasion is being marked Thursday on CBC with an hour-long special titled 50 Years of The Nature of Things.
Longtime and world-renowned host David Suzuki actually was not the original face of The Nature of Things. When the program launched in 1960, it essentially was a wacky half-hour science show co-hosted by Donald Ivey and Patterson Hume.
Suzuki got his own show on CBC in 1974, but it wasn't The Nature of Things. Rather, it was a half-hour program called Science Magazine.
Ultimately, in 1979, The Nature of Things and Science Magazine merged to create the hour-long program The Nature of Things with David Suzuki. The show still exists in that form today, although it has adopted more and more of an environmental stance as the decades have passed.
The special 50 Years of The Nature of Things has plenty of old clips from the archives. Some are moving, some are funny, some are alarming, and we aren't just talking about the shocking changes in Suzuki's hair and wardrobe.
