After the voters suffered collective amnesia last week and forgot Pia Toscano's number, the lineup looks like a boys' night out. At this rate, American Idol will need a Title IX law to guarantee female contestants a chance. While we can, let's look at the girl with the best shot, plus her most formidable competition.
Lauren Alaina: The spoiled one
Although Pia could clearly sing rings around her, Lauren has always been this year's golden girl. The judges fawn over her, but they do that to everyone; more significantly, the producers seem to dote on her personality and single her out for affectionate, disproportionate attention. If she continues to sing within her limitations, her charm could carry her to the top three.
James Durbin : The wild one
Iggy Pop could have been singing about James last week: There's an unusual tinge of excitement surrounding James, as if we're not quite sure just what he — or his spectacular voice — might do. That includes singing a ballad for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame week, a clever, counterintuitive move that pushed him near the top of our scoring pack.
Scotty McCreery: The cool one
Scotty still hasn't stretched himself — the Elvis rockabilly style he flashed so effectively last week was a first cousin to country. But he's no longer anybody's dark horse; we've become confident that he can handle anything the producers throw at him with calm intelligence. It's obvious he's having fun, and that attitude will be hard to beat.
