"The Voice" may be our new favorite reality show -- especially because it's the only one that's not a guilty pleasure. The new series showcases real talent, making a point not to feature people just for a laugh or to embarrass them. While some contestants are better than others, they're all good, and we didn't want to cringe during any of the performances.
One of our favorites was 16-year-old Xenia Martinez, a shy high school student venturing out into the spotlight for the first time. "I've always been the quiet girl," she says. "For a long time, not even my best friend knew that I loved to sing. I keep things to myself a lot, so I think if my school saw me it'd be like, 'Whoa, I didn't know she was a singer or she liked music.'"
She took the stage to sing The Script's song "Break Even." Her performance impressed Cee-Lo Green and Blake Shelton, so they turned their chairs around, indicating that they'd like to coach her into a music career.
And then the game was on.
"To me, there's something very special about your voice. There's a break in there that you use every once in a while. I think it's really cool," Blake said.
Cee-Lo added, "It's raspy, it's got a twang to it--"
"A country twang that I need to be able to craft," Blake interrupted.
"I consider myself country, too," Cee-Lo says. "I'm from Atlanta Georgia. You definitely have an old soul. You're younger than you sound, and that irony is very interesting."
Ultimately, Xenia joined Team Blake. One thing's for sure: we're Team Xenia.
