Hollywood producing-directing power couple Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil are having a pretty awesome week.
They have the #3 movie and the #1 comedy in theaters (Jumping the Broom) and have just struck a multi-year development deal with BET to bring additional programming to the cable network.
The Akils partnered with BET last year to resurrect their comedy The Game, which the CW canceled in 2009. The show's January premiere drew 7.7 million viewers, helping to revamp BET and ensuring another season for the show.
In a joint statement about the new deal, the Akils said they are thrilled to expand the brand of their Akil Productions imprint and promote diversity in programming: "BET has provided us with a tremendous platform to create smart, funny and dramatic, quality programming with multi-layered and multi-dimensional characters appealing to millions of viewers."
