Mark Ballas and Chelsea Kane don't just have the most adventurous choreography on this season of "Dancing With the Stars," they're also earning a reputation for unexpected song choices.
Already tackling Panic at the Disco, the "Harry Potter" score and Chelsea's ex-boyfriend's band, The Summer Set, the two choreographed their intense Paso Doble to "Ghosts 'n' Stuff" by Canadian house DJ and producer Deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse").
Electronica might not be in the usual repertoire for the "DWTS" house band, but it was an appropriate choice considering the artist now holds a special place with the partners.
"I love his music," Ballas told Zap2it after their May 2 performance. "It actually got to the point where it was annoying to her because it's all I would play."
Noticing she wasn't an immediate fan of the electronic music, Mark decided to break her down. "He changed my ringtone to Deadmau5," Chelsea says. "He sent me pictures of Deadmau5 every hour, on the hour, to my phone... to the point where I started sending him pictures of actual dead mice."
Mark eventually surprised Chelsea to see Deadmau5 live, which finally won her over. "That concert was epic," she says. "And then I was a fan. It was cool to dance to that tonight."
They probably would have liked it more if they'd received slightly higher marks and not been slammed for looking "too aggressive."
"How can you have too much aggression in a dance that's about fighting an animal that weighs a ton?" says Mark of the bull-fighting Paso. "Credit should be given when its due, and I feel like she did fantastic tonight."
Chelsea, who seems confident about making it to the finale, takes it in stride. "The thing with this competition is that I'm only in control of so much, and I plan on taking full advantage of the things that are in my control."
"I would love to stay in it until the end -- especially because there are so many dances we haven't learned that we have some really cool ideas for. And I would really like to make it to the freestyle round. We've been reining it in, as it is, and getting in trouble."
