Leaving the CBS Evening News has given Katie Couric back the family time she'd been missing, but there's one thing about being at home in the evenings that she's not too excited about.
"I am going to have to start cooking now, and that is the downside," Couric, 54, told PEOPLE at this week's WNBA's sixth annual Inspiring Women Luncheon in New York, where the former anchor received the league's Inspiration Award.
The culinary arts might not be her thing, but the former anchor does have a plan for the kitchen. "Lots of fresh produce and healthy foods will be on the menu," she says.
More important, she now has "the free time to spend with my daughters" – Ellie, 19, and Carrie, 15. "I am so happy," says Couric, who wouldn't get home until after 8 most nights over the past five years. "It made it hard to spend quality time, especially with my 15-year-old," she says.
Couric has a new book out, The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lesson's From Extraordinary Lives, with all proceeds benefiting Scholarship America. And while there have been rumors of an ABC talk show in the works, she says she's still figuring things out.
"I am lucky I have the luxury of being able to do that and not feeling rushed," she says.
Honored alongside WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, who received the Pioneer Award, Couric joked about their relative stature, physically speaking. "I posed with Lisa, who is 6'2", and I am 5'3", and I'm in 5-inch heels, and I still only came up to her bellybutton," she said.
