Though she's not known as a basketball fan, Katie Couric was honored Tuesday by the WNBA with the league's 2011 Inspiration Award. The award "recognizes an individual who inspires others through her commitment and dedication to work, family, and community." (Previous winners of the award include Susan Rice, United States ambassador to the United Nations and ABC News' Cokie Roberts and Robin Roberts.)
Upon receiving the award at a luncheon at the Gotham Hotel in New York City, the recently departed CBS Evening News anchor said, "I certainly appreciate the importance of having a good team around you. I'm very proud of my award-winning work with my team at CBS over the past five years. As part of my job at the Today show and on the CBS Evening News, I have been fortunate to have the chance to interview presidents and world leaders, celebrities and authors... But despite my proximity to fame and power, I am proudest of the work I have done on behalf of cancer awareness and cancer research."
Couric was coy on her next move. "As many of you know I've spent the past several months deciding what I want to do next," she said. "And while I'm not quite ready to announce my plans, I would like my next job to also include reporting on important, influential newsmakers and helping to educate others — and myself — about important issues we're facing in this country and beyond, in a much more accessible way."
The WNBA's 15th season tips off Friday, June 3 with the Los Angeles Sparks hosting the Minnesota Lynx (11/10c on NBA TV). The next day, defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm hosts the Phoenix Mercury on ABC (June 4, 3/2c).
