William Shatner will be handed an honorary degree from his alma mater next month.
McGill University will give the actor and spokesman the degree June 2, during the Faculty of Arts convocation ceremony.
The Montreal native graduated from McGill in 1952 with a bachelor of commerce degree. During his time as a student, he was president of McGill's Radio Workshop and was active in campus theatre productions as a member of the Player's Club. In 1949, he produced and directed McGill's annual Red and White Review.
The school said Shatner is being honoured for his "stellar contribution" to the arts, the stage, television and film.
The release does not mention his musical career. He is known for his dramatic readings of popular songs.
While Shatner has appeared on many commercials and most recently on the TV show S--- My Dad Says, he is perhaps best known for his role in Star Trek as James T. Kirk, captain of the starship Enterprise, and as a police sergeant on T.J. Hooker.
