Matthew Morrison
* * * (OUT OF FOUR) POP
Matthew Morrison must be pinching himself. Just a few years ago, the singer/actor was largely unknown to audiences beyond Broadway, where he had established himself as one of the most likable performers of his generation. And then there was Glee. Hello, major-label solo album — with guests Elton John, Sting and Gwyneth Paltrow, no less.
The really good news, though, is that Morrison avoids the pitfalls that could have accompanied this venture. Broadway has picked up some of pop music's bad habits lately, with troupers making scenery-chewing meals of bombastic power ballads. The original tunes and pop covers on Matthew Morrison aren't without banal moments, but the singer invests them with both conviction and taste, never flaunting his supple tenor gratuitously. A version of Over the Rainbow with a movie star could have been a nightmare, but Morrison and Paltrow manage an easy, folky sweetness. And It's Over, co-written by Morrison and musical theater veteran Marc Shaiman, is as lean as it is lovely.
All told, the album leaves you bullish on Morrison's prospects for a recording career — which will at some point include a show-tunes collection, hopefully.
