Did Lauren Alaina's single Like My Mother Does sound familiar?
No?
That's because it didn't do very much -- either of the two previous times it was recorded.
The song actually appeared on American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook's Why Wait album in 2008. Then just last year, it was a single for a young singer named Jesse Lee. That version peaked at No. 68 on USA TODAY's Country chart. Both versions are still available from digital retailers like iTunes.
Like My Mother Does was written by Taylor Swift producer Nathan Chapman; Liz Rose, who co-wrote some of Swift's early hits; and Nikki Williams, who recently married Nicolas Cage's son, Weston.
Just because a song didn't catch on the first time it was released doesn't mean it can't. Bless the Broken Road kicked around Nashville for years with multiple versions before Rascal Flatts turned it into a hit.
Even though very few radio listeners ever heard Lee's version, radio programmers did. Some of them will remember it, and they'll also remember that the song stiffed less than a year ago. Some might even use the song's performance history as an excuse not to play Lauren's version.
On the other hand, Lee and Cook weren't able to launch the song from a platform with 25 million viewers.
