Dance choreography and architecture have a lot in common.
To our relief, Blake McGrath didn't laugh when we put that theory to him.
McGrath will be back as the choreographer and rotating third judge on So You Think You Can Dance Canada when it returns for its fourth season Monday, June 20 on CTV.
So we wondered if McGrath would roll his eyes when we opined that in both dancing and architecture, the goal is to be unique while still keeping the building from falling down.
"It's interesting that you compare it to that, actually," McGrath said. "I think there is a connection.
"Obviously you need to have a format and a base. I guess with dancing technique is the structure. There has to be a certain technique that goes with it, instead of just going completely left field.

"But if you are going left field and you can back it up with amazing technique, that's what makes something so beautiful, because you haven't seen it yet, your eye isn't adjusted to it. But if it has a strength to carry it through, with the technical background, then you believe it, so to speak."
McGrath is a Canadian who first entered the public consciousness when he was a contestant on the first season of the American version of So You Think You Can Dance. He subsequently has branched out not only into choreography, but also into singing.
"I'm already working on my sophomore album while still promoting my first album," McGrath said.
"I want to have the record out by the end of the year and I'll be travelling with this one. But I still have two singles from the first record, so I'm trying to stay focused on that project while already thinking about the next one.
"I'm up for video of the year at the MMVAs (Sunday, June 19 on MuchMusic), so I'll be there, and then the premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Canada is the next day, so we've got a lot going on."
With dance-competition shows having been around for a while now, McGrath was asked if the talent level has gone up, or if there are more "fakes" who believe they know how to scam their way through the competition.
"No, we get more talent, for sure, and I think that's what is going to make this season so spectacular," McGrath said.
"I think half of our cast is 18. It's a new generation, a new crop of kids that has been training and waiting for the day that they can be on the show. Because let's face it, this is the biggest thing that any Canadian dancer can do."
So is there a nugget of wisdom that Blake McGrath could pass down to all the young competitors on So You Think You Can Dance Canada?
"Yeah," McGrath said. "I would say, come in knowing that you're the winner of the show with a humble attitude."
Wow, great advice. And it applies to everything in life, from dancing to architecture.
