{alltv} Emmy Nominee Martha Plimpton on Her Early Morning Surprises, Amy Sedaris' Raising Hope Return

When Martha Plimpton woke up Thursday, she got two surprises: an Emmy nomination and a gift from her dog.

The poor pooch had "explosive diarrhea" but, as Plimpton tells TVGuide.com, was "very considerate" and did her business in the shower. "So I spent my morning feeling really good and cleaning up dog poop," Plimpton says. "I like to keep things in balance."

The actress, who was nominated in 2002 for a guest performance on Law & Order: SVU, was woken up by a phone call from her "giddy" publicist.

Although several outlets had predicted she would earn a Best Actress in a Comedy nomination for Raising Hope, Plimpton said she was surprised and touched that the series was honored so early in its run. (Cloris Leachman was nominated for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy for her performance as Maw Maw — Leachman's 22nd nod).

"To get that kind of recognition in your first season is a little bit out of the ordinary so I was just getting psyched and ready to start up our second season," she says. "I wasn't making any mental preparations for anything like this, although I have to say, I am really blown away and really thrilled and really, really happy that the show is getting recognized in this way. It feels really good."

Shooting on Season 2 of Raising Hope starts next month, and Plimpton says she's heard great things from series creator and executive producer Greg Garcia. "He sent some of the outlines for some of the upcoming episodes we're going to do and they're hilarious," she says. "I know Amy Sedaris is coming back, and I know Cloris is going to be doing a lot more this season because she's a series regular now, which is fantastic."
