The new season of The Good Wife, CBS' woman-lawyer-scorned drama, will be about taking risks and evolving. Thus far, it's a strategy that has paid off for executive producer Robert King, who cheered the show's nine Emmy nominations Thursday.
In particular, how will Alicia (Julianna Margulies) behave now that Eli (Alan Cumming) is joining Lockhart Gardner? "Eli and Alicia, the new version of that relationship is very fun," King says. "How is it different now that it's not Alicia more in the power seat, now that it's more equal between [them]?"
It'll be a face-off of Emmy-nominated talent, as both Margulies and Cumming earned acting nods. (Co-stars Archie Panjabi, Christine Baranski and Josh Charles also made the cut.) "It's very exciting that the nominations acknowledge even more of the cast, because we just love them, so to have love come from outside the circle is a good thing too," King says.
Of his five talented actors, Robert King singles out Charles for his first-time nomination for playing heartthrob-turned-schemer Will Gardner. "We're thrilled, especially because I find it a very difficult role that he does so well, which is a little bit of someone who's finagling and cutting ethical corners," Robert King added.
Also scheduled for Season 3: Lisa Edelstein is slated to appear as Will's former law partner in three episodes, but King hints that it could turn out to be a longer gig for the former House star. "You know, we never let people go," he says. "We hang on to them like long-lost brothers, so if there's a chance we can get her for later in the year or even episodes after that, we would."
