"Takes one to know one" is imbued with new meaning when you're talking about the cast and crew of MTV's monster hit Jersey Shore.
The show's co-creator and executive producer SallyAnn Salsano has no problem calling herself a guido and says that it helps her relate to her cast of colorful characters, which includes breakout stars Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi.
"I don't judge them because I am literally exactly like them," Salsano tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I was a guido in high school -- that was the name of our group," "I had the giant hair, the car with the pinstripe and my name inscribed in the door, the Italian horn that hung from the rearview mirror. As cheesy as it sounds, I really did that."
That inside track on the drunken antics of the fist-pumping, GTL-ing, family dinner-having group has, no doubt, been key to the show's meteroic success. The she's-one-of-us level of trust likely also allows Salsano to film the group at their worst, which they frequently and unabshedly are.
"She changed my life for the better," says Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, whose on-off relationship with Sammi Giancola is a main theme of the show. "I had nothing; I came from the bottom. SallyAnn is an amazing person, and I know she loves me -- I don't know why, but I know she loves me to death and would do anything to make sure that I succeed."
The new season of Jersey Shore, which follows the gang in Italy, premieres Aug. 4 on MTV.
