Just before we sat down for the "Ringer" panel at Comic-Con, Zap2it had the pleasure of joining several other reporters and interviewing series cast members Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kristoffer Polaha, Nestor Carbonell and Ioan Gruffudd -- as well as producers Pam Veasey, Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo.
And while we'll be sharing more from Team "Ringer" throughout the Con, including the slightest of spoilers, let's just rip the band-aid and get right into our charming encounter with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
"It's important to us that these characters aren't stereotypical," she says of her eclectic, secretive personalities introduced in the show's pilot, before specifically calling out agent Victor Machado [Carbonell]. "He's not going to be the bumbling FBI agent that you're like, 'Why can't you just figure it out?'
"We get it," Gellar insists. "I am that person that yells at the television screen. [Co-creators] Nicole and Eric are those people that yell at the television screen. So we're making sure that we do not give a reason for anyone to yell at their television screen."
So with Gellar's increased role on the show, serving as both the star and an executive producer, does she have creative say in where the story is going? "I wouldn't want it," she says. "I'm not a writer. I've never fancied myself one. They do a good job."
Still, her leadership role on the show does have its perks. "It is different," she says. "I get a lot of questions answered ahead of time. And in that sort of way, it lightens my load. This show isn't as complicated as ["Buffy the Vampire Slayer"]. I wanted a show where everybody enjoyed their life as well as making the show. It's a different experience than being in your 20s and working crazy hours and being on a show. These are people all with marriages and families and we're trying to honor that as well."
It was that kind of dynamic that drew her back to television -- and "Ringer" in particular.
"I started to miss the family experience you get on a television show," she says. "I knew that I was done with the nomadic lifestyle. Not to say that it's not a great life and I don't know actors who do it really well. It just wasn't the way I wanted my family to be... Being in Los Angeles and being able to get home to put my daughter to bed at night is a really nice feeling."
Having her back on television is a really nice feeling as well.
