Greetings Tweetarians!
I have just landed on your Planet.
This could be my last Tweet.
In an interview in May, back when Jerry Seinfeld was finally getting around to launching his official Web site, this standup and sitcom star told The New York Times that his joining Twitter was about as likely as his running out of offbeat observations on airline travel: "That's stand-up with a net," Mr. Seinfeld said at the time.
Well, apparently even the great comedians need a cushion now and then.
On Friday, Mr. Seinfeld began posting messages on a personal Twitter account, @SeinTime. A press representative for the comedian confirmed that this was his account, writing in an email: "It's really Jerry. The day we've all been waiting for."
As of 6 p.m. on Friday night, Mr. Seinfeld had posted only two messages on his account. "Greetings Tweetarians!" he wrote for starters. "I have just landed on your Planet. This could be my last Tweet." A half-hour later, he wrote: "Second Tweet! Am I done yet?"
So far, he is following only two other fellow Twitter-ers, both closely connected to the Seinfeld universe: Colin Quinn, the star of "Long Story Short," which Mr. Seinfeld directed; and Tom Papa, the host of "The Marriage Ref," the reality show which Mr. Seinfeld helped create. (Mr. Papa in return shared this photo of Mr. Seinfeld, apparently enthralled by the possibilities of social networking.)
We might remind Mr. Seinfeld that his wife, Jessica, is also on Twitter. (Update: Mr. Seinfeld is now following his wife, too.)
