Amy Poehler will be finding herself working in the wee hours again – both on her sitcom Parks and Recreation and with a return to Saturday Night Live to back up none other than Betty White.
First up, Poehler's got new episodes of Parks around the corner (including an arc with guests Rob Lowe and Adam Scott as state auditors investigating the budget crisis in Pawnee), and she's penned an episode of the show that has her character Leslie up all night.
"It's an all-night telethon that happens every year for diabetes research, and Leslie has a four-hour block that she's allowed to kind of program," said Poehler. "She's got a very important special guest lined up ready to come, and that Tom is in charge of, and Tom takes him to the club. Here's a great spoiler: ex-Indiana Pacer, Detlef Schrempf is the big star of the telethon, and he shows up eventually, so it's about her trying to waste time and stay awake. And everyone from the parks department comes to help her."
Poehler admits to having some not-so-nostalgic flashbacks to some SNL all-nighters. "For sure! There are a couple of moments where Leslie is eating power bars to keep up her energy, and the sugar crashing was something I remembered from my SNL days. And the more tired you are, the worse food choices you make."
The comedienne will return to her old stomping grounds for the May 8 episode, supporting the Facebook-inspired hostess with the most-est. "I'm gonna be there with Betty White. We're all coming back for the show. Myself, and Tina Fey, and Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer and Maya Rudolph – we're all coming back to do the Mother's Day special, so we're all gonna be there!" But don't ask her to tease any sketches – things aren't very different from Poehler's long stint there: "Well, the thing with SNL is that it's two weeks out so NOTHING has been thought of."
She's also been enjoying the feedback she's gotten from fans of the show who also work in real-life local governments. "One of the things they say is 'You guys really nailed it how everybody hates the library,'" laughed Poehler. "'They think they're so great and always get whatever they want.' And a couple people showed up with shirts quoting a line from the show that says 'Punk-ass book jockeys.'"
