Last May, rocker Bret Michaels rocked out over Memorial Day weekend at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi. Friday night, Michaels found himself in the same place — singing his heart out on hits like Talk Dirty to Me and Look What the Cat Dragged In while fans screamed their hearts out in adoration.
But the bumpy months in between have been anything but typical.
The ups: winning Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice and filming his new VH1 reality show, Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It, a sneak peek of which airs Memorial Day (10 p.m. ET/PT).
And then there have been the downs: an emergency appendectomy, followed by a brain hemorrhage, followed by a warning stroke and the discovery of a hole in his heart.
Despite all that and the release date for his album being pushed back, he was determined to return to the stage.
"Music and my family and fans and friends are what move my soul," Michaels says before Friday's show while lounging in one of two black tour buses. "And I think tonight the fans will completely understand that I'm going to give 100% of the 75% that I'm running at."
Michaels looked healthy — blue eyes rimmed in glimmering eyeliner — before his comeback show, sitting at a comfy table on the bus, strumming his guitar while a VH1 camera crew filmed him. The scene was a stark contrast to that portrayed on his Rock of Love bus. Deep brown shades created a calming effect, while the scent of a fresh candle hung in the cool air-conditioning.
If Michaels has his way, his next gig will be taking a seat at the judges' table on American Idol. After a surprise duet (Michaels says it was planned months in advance) with contestant Casey James on Wednesday's finale, speculation swirled that Michaels may be in line to replace departing judge Simon Cowell.
He says he'd be honored, adding that the show's producers have talked to him and are interested.
"Simon thinks I would be the perfect replacement," Michaels says. "I think I would rock that world because that is my element."
But for now, he's focused on showing fans how much he appreciates their well-wishes.
"I always walk out and say, 'Man, it's a celebration,' " Michaels says about an hour before taking the stage. "For me, it's an amazing feeling."
