Bickering between husbands and wives has been the basis of sitcoms since I Love Lucy. But Neil Flynn of The Middle is glad his show steers clear of the stereotypical sniping.
"The husband and wife aren't always telling each other how stupid the other one is, which happens sometimes on television," said Flynn, who stars alongside Patricia Heaton as married couple Mike and Frankie Heck.
"These people are flawed but not terrible and they don't make too many jokes at each other's expense."
Flynn and Heaton are sitcom veterans, primarily through their work on Scrubs and Everybody Loves Raymond, respectively.
"The Middle happened to be the first thing I auditioned for after Scrubs ended and I was unemployed for only eight days," Flynn said. "It worked out very nicely. And so far it looks like we're going to stick around for a while. Wouldn't that be fun?"
The Middle, which already has been renewed for a second season, airs Tuesdays on A and Wednesdays on ABC.
