NBC is attempting to get a head start on a turning around its prime time line-up with the early-pick up of Undercovers, a new drama series from J.J. Abrams.
The series stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe as a married couple of retired CIA agents who return to action.
"We have tremendous confidence in this promising series and feel this is a great way to kick off our upcoming upfront development announcements," NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin said in a statement. "J.J. has delivered with our partners at Warner Bros. and we couldn't be happier."
Abrams' series is part of an about-face for NBC's prime-time strategy. The network has stepped up its drama development for the fall after the failure of The Jay Leno Show, which was an attempt to cut programming costs.
Undercovers is the first new series picked up for the 2010-11 season. The broadcast networks will unveil their fall schedules during the week of May 17.
